We are what we do

We are what we do, we are where we are today because of the actions we took yesterday. Everything has a reason. If we are what we eat and we eat what is advertised, then American children are facing death by junk food. Half of all the advertising time on children's television shows is devoted to food ads, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study of food advertising aimed at kids. And what do the commercials pitch? Candy, cereal, fast-food and other restaurants, soda and other sweetened drinks. Just as surely as the tobacco industry tried for years...
If the new rags take effect in 1993 as planned, such terms as "reduced," "low" and "free" on the labels of processed foods will be strictly defined. "Sodium free," for example, will mean no more than 5 milligrams per serving, "low sodium" no more than 140 grams. "Reduced fat" will mean at least 50 percent less fat than the regular product. The Department of Agriculture will have similar rules for fresh vegetables, fruits, meat and poultry.
